Logline: Via Negativa follows Dan, a young priest who has abandoned his conservative diocese after learning of the death of his estranged friend, Paul. Struggling with a deep crisis of faith, he embarks on a journey to find the older priest who once abused Paul during their time in seminary. With a wounded coyote in the back of his car, Dan drifts through the American landscape, encountering eccentric travelers, stealing a gun and other assorted trophies, singing Prince songs and stopping at roadside attractions.

Kwik Shop Woman (click to download sides) Day Player.This kind Catholic woman helps Father Dan out in exchange for a blessing of the rosary she keeps on her rearview mirror
Paul (click to download sides) Supporting. Paul was Father Dan’s closest friend and possibly lover from their time as students at John Bosco’s Minor Seminary. They even have matching tattoos. Before his abuse at the hands of Father James Bruno, their teacher, he was popular and at the top of the class; afterwards, he became quieter and more reserved.

Simon (click to download sides) Day Player This altar boy at a small Catholic church is polite, helpful, diligent, and serious—but unsettlingly so.
Tattooed Man (click to download sides) Day Player This mourner at a Romany Wake is in the middle of a melee over an issue of succession. He helps Father Dan get back to his feet after one of his blows from his large combat boots lands on the innocent priest.
General Selftape Guidelnes
EYE LINE: You should be facing camera with any props in between you and camera. Your eye line should cross camera slightly, ~6 inches offset from lens. See below for reference video.
SLATE: We do not need a slate for this project. Please do not slate (i.e say your name/agency/etc) at the beginning of your takes.
WARDROBE/HAIR/MAKEUP: No hats. No glasses, if possible. Makeup should be light/natural, if any. Casual hairstyle. Please do not wear stripes, neon colors, or busy patterns.
PROPS: No miming, please use real objects whenever called for.
BACKDROP: Please choose a neutral background in a light color. It doesn’t have to be a professional backdrop (a wall is fine), but it should be free of clutter. Please avoid green + blue screens. Grey or white are best.
VIDEO EDITING: None. Record separate clips for each take. Do not add any text to the videos. Do not add a title card. Do not combine clips into a single video. Recording on your cell phone is great.
